Gifs: The Perfect Language Learning Object

Share us:

As a material for teaching language, it doesn’t get better than a gif.  Here is a recent webinar presentation I gave outlining why gifs works so good as “language learning objects”.   Here’s the quick bullet list.

  1. viral, public media that students want to consume/view
  2. widely available, remixable, sharable
  3. low cognitive load as compared to view
  4. highly contextualizing of the language point
  5. looped, repetitive (Mere Exposure effect)
  6. current and cultural
  7. load and play everywhere
  8. teach non-verbal communication (large part of language)
  9. short, clear messages
  10. they’re just plain fun!
